Tsutsujigasaki Yakata

I guess it’s been about two months or so since there’s been a video. Let’s hope was worth the wait.

In early August 2010, I found myself in a city in Yamanashi pref. called Kōfu. There is, of course, Kōfu castle to see there, but a short drive North stands a shrine that sits upon what was once Takeda Shingen’s base of operations. It appears the fortifications of Tsutsujigasaki were never referred to as a castle (jō – 城) but instead as a mansion (yakata – 館).

The site served the three generations of the Takeda, through most of the 1500′s.

Another great video. Thanks for sharing this site with us! I’m not quite so samurai-obsessed as a lot of the people over there on the S-A forums, and I don’t think I’d heard of (or at least not given much thought to) Takeda Shingen’s fortress… But, here it is. And even if there’s not that much to see, as you say, based on the map and such, looks a hell of a lot like a castle, even if it is a “yakata” and not a “shiro.”

Beautiful Noh stage… though it seems like there’s some kind of fence(?) running right through where the audience ought to sit. I’ve never seen Noh at a shrine or castle or anywhere like that before, only in indoor theatres – I’d really love to see it at a place like this. (Or at Itsukushima Shrine, where the stage extends out over the water…)

This comes as a bit of an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise. I was just bulk retweeting myself (never cool) and I thought as I have had a new video for a while that I’d RT this one.

Looking back, the video is a bit embarrassing. Yet, it is probably an accurate representation of me. And as for the fence, I think I overstepped a boundary there.
