Kumamoto cookie

I’ve promised myself I wouldn’t ever do a post on flavoured Kit-Kats, and for anyone who’s ever read a Japanese blog, you may know very well what I’m talking about. And it’s not that I have anything against those who do blog on the topic of Japanese snacks, it’s just that I thought there’d be 1,001 things to get to before getting onto the topic of food. Well, at least I thought that was the case.

So anyway, the other day I’m at work minding my own business when I get a tap on the shoulder. Turns out one of the other teachers went to Kumamoto & brought back the obligatory omiyage (お土産). Pictured below is the snack. It’s a fairly typical souvenir being a small, individually wrapped piece of food.

My question for the advanced students is, who do you see? Such is my shallowness, my interest with the milk cookie is only as deep as its wrapper.

I just did a whole post on weird omiyage from the office. Don’t feel bad.

Hmm, the guy with the tall kabuto samurai helmet appears to be Kato Kiyomasa. Kumomoto castle of course. Although I should probably know, I am not sure who the other people are, maybe his bitter Christian rival Konishi Yukinaga is on the left.

Yeah. Kiyomasa’s kind of hard to miss. The mustachioed guy looks really familiar, but I can’t quite place it… could he be Lafcadio Hearn?

One of these guys has got to be Musashi, right? I’ll guess the red jacket for Musashi.

Beyond that, I’m going to have to pass… all this Googling is quite time-consuming. ^_^

I just checked it out. Nice!

Kato Kiyomasa – check. He’s got that helmet (with Kato family crest) and spear which are give-aways. I don’t believe Konishi Yukinaga is there but he wouldn’ve been out of place.

    Thanks Jon.

The guy with the ‘tache next to Kato Kiyomasa? Soseki Natsume desu. And, well done on spotting Miyamoto Musashi.

  • Toranosukev

Ah. Soseki. I knew that ‘stache looked familiar. Couldn’t quite place it.

I know Soseki. The rest… not so much. Neat package. How was the cookie? ;)

@dbooster @mayumayu713 I finally got around to eating that cookie. The cookie was… good. I was surprised to see Miyamoto Musashi’s face etched into the cookie. (Musashi has got the red coat & the twin sword.)
